Feed the Elephant Game

Great for working on a review of what the kids have learned

We are learning our Alphabet at a slow pace in our class. I like to stop and have reviews so it sticks better. Since we got to the letter E I thought it would be fun to have a little game this kids could take home and play with. 

I roughly traced a trunk, 2 ears and 3 eyes for the kids to cut out. Since I don't have gray paper I just rubbed a gray crayon quickly over the white paper. 

Next I folded the tan paper pretty small (probably into 8ths) and then traced a peanut shape on top and then cut it out as it was folded. It gave the peanuts a rough edge because my scissors are quite cheap but I figured it worked just fine. 

I wrote Letters A-E and then did 5 shapes for the kids that they were learning about. 

The kids glued the parts on to the brown paper bag. Once the glue was mostly dry I cut out a mouth for the peanuts to fit in. 

At the end of the day, we sat around a circle and I would call out a letter or shape and the kids would feed the Elephant the correct letter and shape. Then they took it home and got to play with it at home.

We were working on shapes this day so I traced several shapes of different sizes onto different colors  of paper and then I encouraged the kids to create something with their shapes. This child (above picture) decided to make an animal train with their shapes. This is great for cutting and learning their shapes and colors as well as sizes and imagination.

It looks like we had 2 animal trains that day. 

The above picture was actually a part of our Dinosaur theme. The kids were making shape Dinosaurs. This was a 2 year old that glued all the shapes onto the dinosaur.

Spaghetti Shape Sensory

We recently did Assessments (This is something I sit down with the kids and assess what they know and what they don't so I can lesson plan.) and found that several of the kids needed more work on their shapes. Since it was Letter S day, I boiled some Spaghetti noodles while the kids had their free play time. I traced shapes and slipped the papers into sheet protectors so we could do this activity again in the future. 

I didn't do so good at keeping the noodles easy to handle. They were quite sticky and my impatient kids got a little annoyed with their stickiness. 

I called out shapes and the kids had to find them and then "trace" the letters with the spaghetti.

Once finished, you can throw the extra noodles in a tub for the kids to explore with containers. My kids ended up eating their piles as they worked.
